Still no rain - 6 weeks now! The heavy rains promised for Wednesday skirted the area leaving it bone dry. Roped the kids into the tedious and repetitive process of watering the 2500 crispy new trees using buckets filled from the cattle troughs. This prompted the eldest to research child labour laws and threaten to call social services. Kind of regretting our enthusiasm about instilling independent thought and self determination.
Working with Guy to develop a farm-wide irrigation system - with global warming in full swing we can anticipate more of this weather and we need to future proof the farm. The mains water stopcock was finally located buried about 2 metres in a hedge and the troughs are brimming with fresh water. Unfortuntately we’ve also discovered a massive leak in the piping somewhere. Initially tried to dig out the existing pipe work but soon gave up wrestling with the cement-like compacted clay. Going to go for the less labour-intense option of running new piping up the centres of the Cornish hedging.
Exciting news though - after 12 weeks in the planning office we got permission to install a septic tank! Which means we can say goodbye to the rather grim port-a-loo and use the shiny new loo in the freshly renovated welfare unit. Also means we aren’t adding to the effluent burden on the existing over used and under equipped septic tank for the hamlet.
The family visited bringing with them enthusiasm, energy, the usual amounts of hedonism and some much appreciated elbow grease. They seemed to integrate well with the neighbours - doing surgical house calls and discussing shared histories of guitar playing with the 70’s greats at Cousins.
Dave loaned the kids an amazing racing car go-kart which has apparently entertained a constant stream of children over the past few decades. It certainly went down well with the latest batch of incumbents.
